Langhe Chardonnay Bastia from Conterno Fantino shows how thrilling chardonnay from Piedmont can be. Vines on limestone slopes in Monforte d'Alba are farmed organically and all grapes are picked by hand. After fermentation the wine rests on fine lees, partly in oak, gaining creaminess and structure. The nose is generous, with yellow stone fruit, apricot and citrus notes alongside hints of banana, honey and yellow flowers. On the palate Bastia is intense and saline, its chalky backbone wrapped in a creamy texture and lifted by precise acidity. The long, mineral, mouth-watering finish makes this chardonnay a sophisticated partner for refined fish dishes, poultry, risotto and modern cuisine.
