For Connoisseurs: Mas Desirée Rivesaltes rouge from Languedoc-Roussillon
This Rivesaltes from Mas Desirée is a traditional fortified wine from Roussillon that has matured for many years in cask. The bouquet is complex, with layers of dried fruit, roasted nuts, caramel, spice and a hint of orange peel. On the palate the wine is dense and silky, combining generous natural sweetness with a gently warming alcohol. Flavours of fig, date, candied citrus and almond linger impressively on the finish. Oxidative ageing adds remarkable depth and savoury nuances. Serve slightly chilled as a contemplative dessert wine, perfect with blue cheese, dark chocolate or simply sipped on its own.
