Le Retout

On a gravel ridge in Bordeaux, close to the Gironde, vines at Le Retout dig into deep Garonne gravels with pockets of clay – a Cru Bourgeois revived in the 1950s by the Kopp family after phylloxera, wars and abandonment. A centuries‑old mill site still crowns the highest parcels.

In the vineyard, the focus is on resilience: full ploughing instead of herbicides, careful canopy work, natural fertilisers and a high share of biocontrol. Cabernet Sauvignon leads the blend, with Merlot and Petit Verdot adding flesh and edge, shaped by parcel selection and patient ripening.

In the cellar, classic Médoc craft prevails – controlled fermentations, gentle extraction and élevage in French barriques. A bold footnote is the estate’s curiosity for white grapes in the Médoc, with small plots regrafted to rarities such as Sauvignon Gris or Savagnin, proving that tradition and experimentation can share the same terroir.
