Poggio di Sotto

At the foot of Monte Amiata in Tuscany, Poggio di Sotto sits in Castelnuovo dell’Abate, a quiet corner of Montalcino where old Sangiovese vines and cool evening air build natural tension.

Founded in 1989 when Piero Palmucci acquired the estate, the vineyards—many planted before the 1970s—form a single, contiguous patchwork around the cellar. From day one the focus was organic farming, low yields and meticulous parcel work. In collaboration with the University of Florence, multiple Sangiovese biotypes were mapped, sharpening the estate’s sense of selection and identity.

In the winery, patience is the signature: hand harvesting, spontaneous fermentations, gentle extraction and minimal racking to keep nuance intact. Extended time on fine lees and slow élevage in large casks let structure settle rather than shout—an unmistakably classic Brunello approach, tuned for longevity.
