Weingut Schmidl

With the Danube flowing beneath the ruins of Dürnstein, Wachau, the organic Weingut Schmidl carries a rare double heritage: bread and wine, shaped by generations. Since taking the helm in 2009, the estate has turned decisively to organic farming, restoring focus to the terraces and their stony heartbeat.

Its flagship is Ried Kellerberg, a celebrated site of weathered gneiss and lean, sandy ground that locks Grüner Veltliner and Riesling into a firm, mineral line. Two sub-sites sharpen the picture: Wunderburg with streaks of loess and the stark, rock-driven “Küß den Pfennig”, each a lesson in Wachau’s parcel precision.

Winemaking aims for clarity: gentle ferment, time sur lie and élevage in large oak, calibrated from Steinfeder to Smaragd. The result is not a pose, but Dürnstein rendered as organic, exact craftsmanship.
