Syrah, international oft auch Shiraz genannt, ist eine der großen roten Rebsorten der Welt. Ihre klassische Heimat liegt an der nördlichen Rhône, während Australien den Namen Shiraz zu einem eigenen Stilbegriff gemacht hat.Typisch sind dunkle Beeren, Pflaume, schwarzer Pfeffer, Veilchen, Rauch, Oliven, Kräuter und je nach Klima mehr Frische oder mehr Fülle. Wie schmeckt Syrah?
Syrah zeigt häufig Brombeere, schwarze Kirsche, Pflaume, Veilchen, schwarzen Pfeffer, Lakritz, Oliventapenade, Rauch und manchmal Speck- oder Kräuternoten. Die Tannine sind meist spürbar, aber feinkörnig, der Körper reicht von mittelkräftig bis sehr voll.Kühle Herkünfte bringen oft mehr Frische, Pfeffer, florale Noten und salzige Würze. Wärmere Shiraz-Stile wirken runder, dunkelfruchtiger und kräftiger, mit Noten von Schokolade, süßer Würze und reifer Textur, besonders bei Ausbau im Holz.

Syrah ist historisch eng mit der nördlichen Rhône verbunden, wo Appellationen wie Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Joseph und Crozes-Hermitage zu den klassischen Referenzen zählen. Auch im südlichen Rhône-Tal und in Südfrankreich ist die Sorte wichtig, oft in Cuvées.Als Shiraz prägt die Sorte Australien, vor allem Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale, Clare Valley und andere Regionen. Darüber hinaus findet man Syrah / Shiraz in Südafrika, Kalifornien, Chile, Argentinien, Spanien und vielen weiteren Weinländern.
Welche Syrah- und Shiraz-Stile gibt es?
Klassischer Syrah aus kühleren Lagen ist oft pfeffrig, floral, frisch und strukturiert, mit dunkler Frucht und herzhafter Würze. In der nördlichen Rhône kann er elegant, langlebig und sehr terroirgeprägt sein.Shiraz aus wärmeren Regionen zeigt meist mehr Reife, Volumen und samtige Fülle. Daneben ist Syrah ein wichtiger Partner in GSM-Cuvées mit Grenache und Mourvèdre, in Roséweinen Südfrankreichs und gelegentlich in Schaumwein- oder süßen Spezialitäten, wobei trockener Rotwein klar dominiert.
